Loraine Faschingbauer, a resident in the small town of Bloomer, Wisconsin is semi-retired from a nursing career as an Activity Director Assistant. During her twenty-two years of working with residents having Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, ventilator dependents, and the general geriatric population, she had many stories to tell. This story is based on a true story and is one of her favorites.

“Ms. Kay, please come to the ventilator unit immediately,” the voice on the intercom announced. Now what’s Lindsay done? Ms. Kay sighed, stood up, and left the unfinished paperwork scattered on her desk.
Ms. Kay, activity director at the Oak Ridge Rehabilitation Center, should be joyful preparing for her wedding to Jim Parrish, her live-in boyfriend, who is building a log cabin for their honeymoon cottage and future home. But Ms. Kay’s family disease, multiple sclerosis, causes her concern. Her sister, Lindsay Rush, has the disease and is in an immobile state on the ventilator dependent unit at the Oak Ridge Rehab Center. Lindsay is known as a tantrum-throwing rebel when she gets bored. Ms. Kay feels responsible for her sister and helps the staff control Lindsay’s outbursts. Lindsay has asked Ms. Kay to work with her to get her GED, and this concerns not only Ms. Kay but the instructor of the Vo-Tech College, who tries to discourage the idea. Ms. Kay and Jim are surprised when Jim’s secretary quits for no apparent reason. Ms. Kay wonders what’s behind it while Jim begins checking his paperwork at the office.
