Spiro J. Shetuni is an Associate Professor at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina, U.S.A.; an Albanian-American scholar, professor, ethnomusicologist, and musicologist of Aromanian descent; he holds a PhD in the field of music; has authored academic books, studies, and articles on both Albanian traditional and art music; has been a visiting scholar at major research institutions; has taught the discipline of ethnomusicology at several American universities. The Book IV, Albanian Traditional Music: Lab Music, explores fundamental social-aesthetic and formal-structure aspects of traditional Lab music. Among the issues taken into consideration, are: 1) fundamental distinguishing features; 2) main expressive means; 3) prominent musical styles; 4) characteristic musical genres; and 5) the interaction between traditional Lab music and traditional Greek music, etc.
The 6-book series titled Albanian Traditional Music is the fruit of a research activity with more than 20 years. Its content is complicated, complex, and multi-dimensional. The main issues dealt with could possibly be formulated in this way: First, issues of traditional Albanian music in general, such as: the substantial core, the formal core, the national core, and the universal aesthetic core, etc. Second, issues concerning the main dialects of Albanian traditional music–Gheg musical dialect, Tosk musical dialect, Lab musical dialect, and Urban musical dialect—such as: distinguishing features, expressive means, musical styles, and musical genres, etc. Third, issues of interaction between traditional Albanian music and music of other peoples, such as: the traditional music of the Greek people, traditional music of Aromanian people, art music of Turkish people, etc. Fourth, issues of the future of traditional Albanian music.Outskirts Press Review
